HARRISBURG – Today, the Pennsylvania House of Representatives passed legislation that would invest federal funding in the research and development of a vaccine for COVID-19. The legislation makes $10 million available for vaccine research and development to entities across Pennsylvania.

The funding was strongly advocated for by Reps. Natalie Mihalek (R-Allegheny/Washington), Lori Mizgorski (R-Allegheny), Tim O’Neal (R-Washington), Marci Mustello (R-Butler) and Valerie Gaydos (R-Allegheny), who issued the following statement:

“We are excited to announce that the House has approved this funding. Here in southwestern Pennsylvania, the McGowan Institute is a huge asset to our region, our Commonwealth and our nation as it has been an innovative leader in the field of regenerative medicine. They have been at the forefront of COVID-19 vaccine testing, and we have already seen them make great strides in their research. Recognizing their outstanding work and the potential that their research has, it is our strong belief that this funding will help institutions like the McGowan Institute combat this deadly disease.”

In April, scientists at the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine announced that testing of a vaccine, delivered through a fingertip-sized patch, showed great promise in treating the coronavirus. According to reports, the vaccine will produce antibodies specific to SARS-CoV-2 at quantities believed to be enough to neutralize the virus.

Since first being established in 1992 to develop artificial organs, the McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine has become a world-class leader in developing treatments by reestablishing damaged tissue and organs. Their work has advanced the treatment of cancer, diabetes as well as diseases impacting the heart and lungs.

The funding is provided through the Coronavirus Relief Fund, which is part of the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act.
